The hilarious Ealing-style comedy opens this year’s Film Festival. Starring Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna as young couple Matt and Jean who inherit the Bijou, a run-down, cinema from Tom’s great uncle. Competitor Hardcastle wants to build a car park and offers them a measly fee for the site. The couple refuse and pretend to want to reopen their cinema in the hope that he’ll raise his offer. The cinema’s three long-time employees, cashier Mrs. Fazackalee (Margaret Rutherford), projectionist Mr. Quill (Peter Sellers), and doorkeeper and usher Old Tom (Bernard Miles make the movie a must-see, and the sequence in which this trio relive the glories of the silent era is unmissable.
