Join us at iconic coastal landmark Cullercoats Watch House for a special screening of "The Perfect Storm". View the recently completed exterior renovations and contribute to our fundraising to complete the interior refurbishment. With a panoramic backdrop of the North Sea coast and a history encompassing maritime triumph and tragedy, what more fitting location could there be for this screening.

This Hollywood blockbuster, based on Sebastian Junger's best-selling book, brings the perils of the sea to vivid life. The film recounts the true story of the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing boat which ventured out of Gloucester, Massachusetts in October 1991 and into the heart of a weather system later termed the "Perfect Storm". This tale of a battle for survival against nature's fury resonates deeply with our coastal community. Indeed, mindful that this year is the 50th anniversary of the loss of all hands aboard supertrawler ‘FV Gaul’, and respectful of North Shields’ civic commemoration on 21st September, the Fishermen’s Mission will also collect donations, just as they collected funds at the film’s original screenings in 2000.

Capturing the universality of mariners’ experiences, revered US artist Winslow Homer portrayed the fishing community of Gloucester, Mass in 1880, and by summer of 1881 he was resident in Cullercoats where the raw beauty of the coastline, the hardships and spirit of its people transformed his artistic vision. This film's themes of courage, sacrifice, and respect for the sea's power also echo the experiences of generations of local fishermen, their families and lifeboat crews.
