The 9th Whitley Bay Film Festival kicks off on August 16th with over two weeks of pop up film, art and culture in a range of venues from the historic Seaton Delaval Hall to The Exchange in North Shields and calling in on coastal locations including The Rendezvous Cafe and St Mary’s Lighthouse.
Tickets for most events are available to buy online now and are also available from the Customer First Centre, York Road, Whitley Bay. More tickets will be available to buy online shortly.

We kick off this year’s festival in the glamorous setting of the newly refurbished Spanish City Pleasure Buildings.
The evening will continue with an illustrated talk by local graphic designer Mick Sharp, whose forthcoming book The Dome of Memories traces the history of The Spanish City Dome and fairground. The event will be completed with rare archive film of Whitley Bay from the North East Film Archive. We’ll also be screening a short film made for Heritage Open Days in 2010 to celebrate the centenary of the Dome featuring interviews with visitors to Whitley Bay from as far back as the 1930s.

For one summer weekend a community in Whitley Bay becomes the venue for contemporary visual arts.
This year ArtHouses is hosted by the residents of a group of pedestrianised streets close to the centre of Whitley Bay, who open up their homes and gardens to artists, showing an array of contemporary artworks in all media. See details here

Harold and Maude is a dark gem of a film. Although it offended critics and was commercially unsuccessful at the time of its release, the film has since become a cult classic. The Whitley Bay Film Festival is honoured to celebrate the massively popular work of Alan Hull with a rare opportunity to see the 1974 television drama 'Squire'. We are joined by writer Tom Pickard whose friendship with Hull led the singer/songwriter securing the lead role and also supplying the soundtrack. The Alan Hull Song book, comprising of Dave Hull-Denholm and Ian Thomson will also be performing at this event.
