Director Dexter Fletcher will be our guest at this years Rocketman event on the 20th August

and has selected Wild Bill, his directorial debut, to be screened on the lead up to his visit.

Dexter Fletcher was in films from childhood, as Baby Face in Bugsy Malone (d. Alan Parker, 1976), the boy who frees The Elephant Man (UK/US, d. David Lynch, 1980) from the freak show, and Al Pacino's son in the Goldcrest-wrecking Revolution (d. Hugh Hudson, 1985).

Very popular with young people as Spike in TV's Press Gang (ITV, 1989-93), he has made his mark as an adult actor in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (d. Guy Ritchie, 1998) and Topsy-Turvy (UK/US, d. Mike Leigh, 1999).

Fletcher continued to work in the industry on screen appearing alongside acting greats Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Robert de Niro, Helen Mirren and Liam Neeson to name but a few.

​Fletcher’s films as a director have garnered world wide recognition and enthusiastic reviews, resulting in numerous nominations and awards. His directorial debut, Wild Bill (2011), earned Fletcher a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut and two Writers Guild of Great Britain Awards. His second film, Sunshine on Leith (2013), was nominated for five Scottish BAFTA awards. Eddie the Eagle (2015), was the highest-grossing British film in the UK in 2016. Fletcher’s involvement with Bohemian Rhapsody was crucial, as he was called in to complete the film. The biographical rock-music drama about Freddie Mercury and Queen was a box-office hit and won four Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Rami Malek as Mercury. Fletcher’s 2019 Elton John biopic Rocketman was a Best Picture nominee at the BAFTA and Golden Globe awards, won Taron Egerton a Golden Globe for Best Actor and won Elton John and his longtime collaborator, Bernie Taupin, their first joint Academy Award. In 2022 Fletcher’s Paramount+ television series The Offer earned Critics Choice Awards nominations for Best Limited Series, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. In 2023, Fletcher directed the Apple+ film Ghosted, which marked his debut in directing a large-scale action production. Starring Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Adrian Brody Ghosted was the most-watched movie debut to date for Apple+.

Out on parole after 8 years inside, Bill Hayward returns home to find his now 11 and 15-year old sons abandoned by their mother and fending for themselves. Unwilling to play Dad, his arrival brings them to the attention of social services. With the danger of being put into care looming, Dean forces his Dad to stay by threatening to grass him up for dealing. Bill soon connects with Jimmy and through this new bond starts to realise what he's been missing. He has a family and a place in the world, but when Jimmy gets into trouble with Bill's old cohorts, he quickly has to decide what kind of Dad he wants to be. A good one, or a free one.
